Imatib containing the active ingredient imatinib mesylate is an anticancer type of medication called a kinase inhibitor. It works by interfering with the action of certain proteins to help prevent cancer cells from multiplying and stop the spread of cancer cells. It can be used to treat certain types of cancer such as leukemia, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, and dermamtofibrosarcoma protuberans when the tumor cannot be removed surgically has spread to other parts of the body or has come back after surgery.
Imatib tablets are used to treat cancers in which there is a similar genetic abnormality resulting in loss of control of cell growth. Imatib tablets are also used to treat adults and children with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) that is newly diagnosed or after the failure of interferon therapy; also newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in adults and children in combination with chemotherapy or as monotherapy in adults with relapsed or refractory (difficult to treat) ALL. CML and ALL are positive for the Philadelphia chromosome, which is a specific chromosomal abnormality that results in the uncontrolled growth of white blood cells.
The tablets should be taken with a meal along with a full glass of water. For patients who cannot swallow the tablet whole, it may be dissolved in a glass of water or apple juice to be taken as a liquid.
