Veenat 100 (Imatinib) is used for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumors), and other cancers. It works by blocking the abnormal protein needed for cancer to spread.
Veenat 100 (Imatinib) is indicated for different types of cancers, in particular, Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) myelogenous leukaemia. It acts by affecting the growth of cancerous cells. Other applications include gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST, a rare type of cancer that affects the stomach and digestive system) and a skin cancer called DFSP (dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans) when it cannot be removed surgically.

Treatment of patients with Ph+ CML by means of this medicine can help to manage the symptoms and improve the MMR (major molecular response), meaning that the levels of BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase protein (the abnormal protein present in patients with Ph+ CML) is reduced. This drug is known as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, and it helps to block the development of cancer cells. It specifically attacks the cancer cells (which have the tyrosine kinase protein) but not the non-cancerous healthy ones. This is often referred to as targeted therapy.

The active compound contained in this drug is known as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. A key step in its mechanism of action when used for CML is the ability to inhibit the bcr-abl tyrosine kinase from triggering the phosphorylation of proteins, which is required for the cancer cells to develop. This in turn causes the destruction of the cancerous cells, allowing for the treatment of symptoms. It is generally used in cases when bone marrow transplants are not considered as the primary treatment option.
