Muse (Alprostadil) is used by means of transurethral administration, Muse (Alprostadil) has been shown to benefit men affected by erectile dysfunction. It works by causing an erection, which is achieved by means of acting on erectile tissue and improving blood flow to the penis. When delivered through the urethra, the erectile tissues in the penis absorb it. Following this, it acts on the smooth muscles in the corpus spongiosum and corpus cavernosum (tissue in the penis which contains a large volume of blood when an erection is achieved) and causes them to relax.
Studies have also demonstrated that it causes vasodilation (blood vessel widening) on the cavernosal arteries, which triggers a quick inflow of blood while also impeding venous outflow in the subtunical vessels. Experts refer to this process as the veno-occlusive mechanism, and it results in the penis becoming rigid. Patients are able to achieve a satisfactory erection which allows them to engage in sexual activity. And the delivery system provided allows patients to deliver the medicine straight to the urethral lining. Each application is only used once after which it is discarded, and there are a total of 6 applicators provided. The medicine content of each applicator is 500mcg. You will be given thorough instruction by your doctor before use, to ensure that you can properly administer it. Patients are generally told to start out using a lower strength variety (either 125mcg or 250mcg), after which the doctor may direct you to use the 500mcg strength instead. The dosage will be decided by your doctor, however, patients are usually told not to administer more than 2 doses in any 24 hour period. Before use, you should first urinate. Following this, the applicator may be removed from the foil sachet. Take the protective cover off the applicator. To use it, you will need to sit down or stand up (whichever is most comfortable) and gently stretch the penis so as to straighten it out.
The applicator stem is inserted into the urethra and the button on the applicator should be pushed down, releasing the pellet into the penis. It may be necessary to hold the applicator like this for roughly 5 seconds. It is then possible to remove the applicator and gently massage the penis for 10 seconds so as to ensure that the medicine is properly absorbed. Make sure that your doctor has instructed you on proper use before using it yourself, and never exceed the recommended dosage. Men should be advised to urinate before insertion because lubricants should not be used and a moist urethra will allow for easier insertion of the plunger device.
